Introduction to High Dynamic Range (HDR) Video

This 1-day course introduces the production & post-production concepts necessary for HDR (high dynamic range) broadcast delivery. It is ideal for media professionals who need to understand  what  HDR is and how it affects their job scope.

Participants will learn what the various standards for HDR are, and how to prepare for them.

Emphasis will be placed on the HDR10 standard, which is currently prevalent among consumer displays.

Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of how to shoot & deliver content for standard broadcast is recommended, but not necessary.

  •     Differences between SDR (standard dynamic range) and HDR (high dynamic range) standards for UHDTV
    •         Colour Space
    •         Nits and IRE
  •     Difference between the main HDR standards – HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG
  •     What production equipment do you require for HDR?  And how do you shoot for HDR?
  •     Demonstration of HDR shoot
  •     What post-production setup do you require for HDR?
  •     How colour grading for HDR differs from SDR
  •     Demonstration of grading for different peak luminance levels
  •     Demonstration of adapting a HDR grade for SDR
  •     Demonstration of encoding for consumer HDR playback
